20 years ago this year my original personal website was renamed “Glenn’s World”  and the domain name www.glenns-world.com was created. Since then the website has changed much and been moved from one platform to another. Its original function has also changed as the website outgrew itself until it was expanded into the “Glenn’s World Network”, see About. In 2007 the “Glenn’s World” website was moved from its traditional website platform to a “Blog” format. Since then Glenn’s World Network has expanded by as many as ten different blogs, each having its on point of emphasis.image

Mother's Day Turns 100 (+1):

Its Surprisingly Dark History

from National Geographic:

image…In the postwar years Jarvis and other women organized Mother's Friendship Day picnics and other events as pacifist strategies to unite former foes. Julia Ward Howe, for one—best known as the composer of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic"—issued a widely read "Mother's Day Proclamation" in 1870, calling for women to take an active political role in promoting peace…

"Mother's Day," Not "Mothers' Day"

…Anna Jarvis never had children of her own, but the 1905 death of her own mother inspired her to organize the first Mother's Day observances in 1908.

On May 10 of that year, families gathered at events in Jarvis's hometown of Grafton, West Virginia—at a church now renamed the International Mother's Day Shrine—as well as in Philadelphia, where Jarvis lived at the time, and in several other cities…

Storming Mother's Day

…Anna Jarvis's idea of an intimate Mother's Day quickly became a commercial gold mine centering on the buying and giving of flowers, candies, and greeting cards—a development that deeply disturbed Jarvis. She set about dedicating herself and her sizable inheritance to returning Mother's Day to its reverent roots…

How to Find Union-Made Tires:

courtesy of David Whitaker:

The U.S. Department of Transportation requires that all tires sold in the United States carry a code which shows, among other things, the company and plant that made the tire. The code would look like this:

DOT BE XX XXX XXX

The two symbols (either two letters or a letter and a number) which follow “DOT” indicate the company and the plant where a tire was manufactured. For example, the above code indicates a tire made by B. F. Goodrich in Tuscaloosa, AL. The following is a listing of all U.S. and Canadian unionized tire plants and their DOT codes. By comparing this list to the code on the tire you are buying, you can be certain you are getting a USW-made tire.

CODE         COMPANY, CITY

BE B. F. Goodrich Tuscaloosa, Ala.
BF B. F. Goodrich Woodburn, Ind.
VE, YE, YU, 8B     Bridgestone/Firestone Des Moines, Iowa
D2, E3, W1, Y7     Bridgestone/Firestone Lavergne, Tenn.
2C, 4D, 5D         Bridgestone/Firestone Morrison, Tenn.
UP Cooper Findlay, Ohio
UT Cooper Texarkana, Ark.
JU, PC, UK         Goodyear Medicine Hat, Alberta
DY Denman Tire Warren, Ohio
JJ, MD, PU         Goodyear Gadsden, Ala.
DA Dunlop Buffalo, N.Y.
JN, MJ, PY         Goodyear Topeka, Kan.
JE, MC, PT         Goodyear Danville, Va.
JT, MK, TA         Goodyear Union City, Tenn.
JF, MM, PJ         Kelly-Springfield Fayetteville, N.C.
CC Yokohama Tire Salem, Va.

* Any Goodyear racing tire made in the United States is a USW-made tire.
** Any Goodrich racing tire or off-the road tire made in the United States is a USW-made tire.

In addition to company brands, these codes will also appear on “Associate Brand” and “Private Brand” tires manufactured at the above plants.
The key, then, to being sure of getting a USWmade tire is the DOT code. Be sure and check it with this listing.

Helpful Hints For Winter: UPDATE

reposted from 1-14-11

Haven’t tried these out and haven’t ‘fact checked’ them either, but if you find yourself in a crunch [Hello Georgia…how you like your white Christmas?]28_4_9 you might give them a try. Let me know which ones work or your opinion on any of them using the ‘Leave/Read a comment’ link below. My comments  are in this color & format…gdl

  • UPDATE: 2-3-11: Prior to freezing rain or sleet place those small plastic shopping bags over your mirrors to keep ice from forming. Use the handles to tie the bags on and just tear them off when your ready to drive.
  • UPDATE: 2-3-11: Whenever parking for a lengthily period [overnight, shopping, at work] pull your windshield wipers away from your windows so they don’t freeze to the window.
  • UPDATE 1-18-11: Discovered a new one myself. Instead of placing you ‘house’ broom by the door for cleaning snow and salt from my boots and shoes I bought a cheap toilet brush and stand at the dollar store and have it there. It’s better because the bristles are stiffer, the short handle allows better handling, the stand and you can put your broom back where it belongs.

  • Keep your headlights clear with car wax! Just wipe ordinary car wax on your headlights. It contains special water repellents that will prevent that messy mixture from accumulating on your lights - lasts 6 weeks. All these years I’ve been doing this by accident and didn’t realize it. Probably wore off between my last waxing and the first snow. I’ve found ‘RainX’ very effective for this.
  • Squeak-proof your wipers with rubbing alcohol! Wipe the wipers with a cloth saturated with rubbing alcohol or ammonia. This one trick can28_4_11 make badly streaking & squeaking wipers change to near perfect silence & clarity.
  • Ice-proof your windows with vinegar! Frost on it's way? Just fill a spray bottle with three parts vinegar to one part water & spritz it on all your windows at night. In the morning, they'll be clear of icy mess.. Vinegar contains acetic acid, which raises the melting point of water---preventing water from freezing! Also found ‘RainX’ helps here too.
  • Prevent car doors from freezing shut with cooking spray! Spritz cooking oil on the rubber seals around car doors & rub it in with a paper towel.  The cooking spray prevents water from melting into the rubber. Guess this should work, might be better than my trick of knotting the end of a towel and placing it inside the car and closing the door on it with the other end hanging out: unlock the door, pull the handle and towel at the same time.
  • Fog-proof your windshield with shaving cream! Spray some shaving cream on the inside of your windshield & wipe if off with paper towels. Shaving cream has many of the same ingredients found in commercial defoggers. ???
  • De-ice your lock in seconds with hand sanitizer! Just put some hand sanitizer gel on the key & the lock & the problems solved! Makes since.brrrrFreezing

The Latest @ Other Glenn's World Sites

SARCASIM FONT:

For the sake of clarity, I am establishing my own personal ‘sarcasm’ font. Now I have no skill set that allows me to create a font, nor do I believe my post or blogs are trendy enough that my designating a font will catch on, but as protection against poor or ambiguous satire on my part, my blogs will utilize the “Gentium Basic” font, bold/italic, as text that should be read as satire. (in red on light backgrounds, or yellow on dark backgrounds)

(note: that this is for future post/articles, there are no current plans to update old post)
